How Often Should You Repaint Your Home Interior

Rudy Grippo • August 3, 2020

Some homeowners may wonder how often they should be repainting the interior surfaces of their home and how to know when a good time is. Most often, people will repaint the interior walls in order to update the color of a room, but even if you aren’t changing the color, it is good to occasionally repaint for general upkeep of your surfaces. It is inevitable, kids and pets can be a big contributing factor to wear and tear all around your home.

Many modern paints are engineered to last between 5 and 10 years, but there are some factors that may contribute to needing to repaint them earlier. Some walls in your home may need to be painted more frequently than others due to daily wear and tear. If you have frequent gatherings, kids and/or pets, you also might need to repaint some parts of your home more frequently than you might think.

Painting the Hallways and Corridors

These areas will probably see a ton of scuff marks or even dents. Hallways tend to see a lot of action, especially if you are shuffling items or furniture from room to room. Your hallway sees so much foot traffic, and many times people walking down a hallway might bump their possessions into it causing scratches or scuff marks. It may be necessary for them to be painted every 2 to 3 years. Before painting, you will want to make sure that any dents or scratches are fixed.

Kitchen, Bathroom and Laundry Room

These types of rooms are very busy and will probably need the most durable paints. You will need a paint that will be able to withstand being washed frequently. Bathrooms and laundry rooms are exposed to a lot of heat and humidity, so you want to find a paint that will withstand that as well as resist the formation of mildew. Kitchens see the most amount of traffic in homes, as they are a central gathering point in almost every household. Between entertaining guests or family dinners, your kitchen will probably see the most wear and tear in the house. Homeowners will usually want to repaint these types of rooms every 3-4 years.

Children’s Bedrooms

Children’s bedrooms often times take a beating when it comes to the paint on the walls. Not just scratches and dents, but if your child has ever drawn on the wall, then you know that your children’s walls are not as clean as you’d want them to be. Often times a child’s bedroom also doubles as their playroom and might see some abuse from toys. This may be the cause for you to need to repaint your children’s bedroom every 2-3 years in order to keep a fresh look on the walls. Another factor that contributes to repainting children’s bedrooms is their age. Your children’s bedroom color at 5 years old will be very different than what they will want at age 10 or when they are a teenager at age 13. Depending on how often you are willing to paint their room, your child’s wall color might change 3-5 times throughout their time living in your home.

Living Room and Dining Room

Your living room might see more action than your dining room, but typically these two rooms see a good amount of traffic. Although, you may not need to repaint them too frequently as the activity in these rooms tends to be more laid back and formal. Repainting these rooms for most homeowners only happens every 5 to 7 years. Not only is wear and tear a reason many people paint their walls, but also the ever changing shifts in trends is another factor. As home décor trends are always changing, some homeowners may feel the need to keep up with it more frequently than others. But it is important to keep up with what trends are popular so that your home doesn’t become too dated.

Of course, it always comes down to preference and how much you care about the appearance of your walls in your home. Taking into consideration the type of room, quality of the original paint job and current décor trends, will give you good indicators to help determine when you should be looking to repaint your walls. Each different type of room requires various amounts of prep work in order to be repainted, which is always something to consider.

When considering a change in your kitchen, the first thing you should look at is the color of your cabinets. Your cabinets play a big part in the look of the kitchen. Cabinets can take up a large area, making it important that cabinet color works in sync with the rest of your kitchen colors and décor. Updating your whole kitchen can be a large, inconvenient and expensive project. If you aren’t looking to do a full kitchen remodel, freshening up your cabinets with a coat of paint can provide just the right update you are looking for at a small cost. Of course, there are a number of factors to consider when it comes to choosing the right color to paint your kitchen cabinets such as lighting, backsplash color, appliances, material type and evening flooring.
